Introduction

Welcome to the Borstal Village Website, a source of information for the village near Rochester in Kent, UK, a place perhaps best known for being the first young offenders prison, the Borstal Institution.

Described in the 1920s by local resident Donald Maxwell as 'frankly hideous' and 'exceptionally ugly'. Borstal may not be the most picturesque of villages, but Maxwell was being a little harsh, or perhaps the village has improved visually over the years since the demise of the local cement works. There are a few pleasant areas such as Priestfields playing fields, Watts Meadow and the neighbouring almshouses and Baty's Marsh to name but three.
